Before me and after my time

Bellobono estende la sua pratica pittorica relazionandosi a comunità con le quali sviluppare un percorso condiviso con i primi abitanti che popolarono New York, i Nativi americani “Lenni Lenape” che diedero nome a Manhattan, nome derivante da “Manna-Hatta, l’isola dalle molte colline”. I discendenti Lenape più vicini a Manhattan vivono oggi nella zona di Mahwah sui Monti Ramapo del New Jersey a circa 25 miglia da New York.

It’s important to keep in mind that New York City was, and in fact still is, indigenous land.

This project aim to investigate the history of the first people who populated New York, the native American “Lenni Lenape” who gave the name to Manhattan, which derives from “Manna-Hatta, the island of many hills”. The Lenape closest to Manhattan are today living in the area around Ringwood and Mahwah on the Ramapo Mountains of New Jersey.

Conceived as a collaboration between artist Angelo Bellobono and the Ramapough Lenape tribe, “Before me and after my time” is a long term project exploring the artist’s investigation of belonging, identity, transformation and the changing nature of things. Once again Bellobono extends his painting practice towards projects that collectively highlight community engagement.
